In our practice, highly trained Dental Hygienists who employ the latest American and European prophylaxis techniques make use of a sophisticated computerized protocol for the prevention of tooth loss and other health issues. They are prevention specialists, focused on the early detection and deterrence of dental caries (tooth decay), periodontal (gum) disease, oral cancer and oral signs of other systemic conditions.
The number of bacteria in periodontal pockets
The last German Oral Health Study (2005) showed that the incidence of moderate and severe periodontal inflammation increased significantly. By the age of 35 to 44 years, 50% of the people have signs of a moderate periodontitis and other 20% show signs of severe periodontitis. This means that almost three-quarters of all adults are affected by this disease. In the USA, the extensive implementation of awareness and educational Dental Hygiene programs has led to a decrease of periodontal disease incidence to 47.2% (2010) but it is still at high levels (70%) for adults over the age of 65. Not only that tooth decay and periodontal disease can lead to costly dental work, but the current research and clinical-based evidence suggests that these diseases can contribute to more serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes and even Alzheimer’s.
A proactive approach to oral health is an essential part of a healthy life. The Oral Prophylaxis treatment is the best possible method of maintaining health and detecting incipient signs of other diseases. As part of our Prophylaxis appointment, the dental hygienist takes appropriate time to evaluate the efficacy of previous treatments and individualize the interval between appointment based on patient’s medical needs. Our goal is to provide each and every patient with valuable knowledge how to best maintain oral and body health.
